The roseate spoonbill is a gregarious wading bird of the ibis and spoonbill family. It is a resident breeder in South America mostly east of the Andes, and in coastal regions of the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, the Gulf Coast of the United Statesand on central Florida’s Atlantic coast. In the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, many European (white) spoonbills appear. In 17th century Holland, the spoonbill was a symbol of wanton, alcoholism and slander. For the explanation of this symbolism one must look at the long beak. The heron and stork too have long bills, but much more than these two the spoonbill sticks his beak deeply in the mud.
