Biological experimentation on guinea pigs has been carried out since the 17th century. The animals were frequently used as model organisms for experiments in the 19th and 20th centuries, resulting in the epithet ‘guinea pig’ for a test subject. They have since been largely replaced by other rodents such as mice and rats but are still used in research, primarily as models for human medical conditions such as juvenile diabetes, tuberculosis, scurvy, and pregnancy complications. A 2004 study with young guinea pigs exposed to environmental tobacco smoke, showed an increase in citric acid-induced cough and bronchoconstriction in part by an neurokinin-1 receptor mechanism in the nucleus tractus solitarius.
