Reviving Lolita

‘Reviving Lolita’ at KRAUSE GALLERY is Eric van Straaten’s first exhibition in New York (opens at 28 February). What the obsession of western civilization with (frozen) youth means for girls themselves, is painfully described in Mary Pipher’s book ‘Reviving Ophelia; Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls‘. Eric tries to transform the Ophelia-figures into Nemeses (in the sense of the Greek goddess Nemesis, the spirit of divine retribution against those who succumb to HUBRIS: arrogance before the gods). He believes that Vladimir Nabokov, when he coined the name in his controversial novel, meant his Lolita-figure to be a similar one: a creature that turns on its maker.
