Physical Culture is a health and strength training movement that originated during the 19th century in Germany, England, and the United States. An example is the Muscular Christianity movement that advocated a fusion of energetic Christian activism and rigorous physical culture training. As physical culture became increasingly popular and profitable, there arose intense national and then international competition amongst the founders and/or promoters of various systems. This rivalry became informally known as “the Battle of the Systems”. Nowadays in Australia, there is a growing number of young girls teenagers and women embracing a contemporary version of Physical Culture called ‘Physie’. Participants wear leotards and tights for performances and competitions. It is extremely uncommon for boys to participate up to the age of 12 and thus, Physie is a synchronized, all-girl team-based sport that aims to empower girls for life: “There is an aura of confidence around Physie girls of all ages. Taught to stand tall, with strength and pride, they are team players committed to achieving their goals. Watching the skill, confidence and focus that these outstanding athletes display along with their graceful, artistic expression is inspiring.”
