3D Printing

Eric van Straaten offers his experience in Art Grade Full Color 3D Printing to other designers

Good news! The extensive experience of Eric van Straaten with full color 3D printing is now available for designers.

The fragility of the model right out of the machine, and the fact that it has to be post processed intensively to acquire a beautiful finish, makes full color 3D printing a very intensive and highly specific handicraft.

Because of my seven years of experience with the technique, I am able to provide you with the highest quality possible in full color 3D printing: very fine details, bright sharp textures and a beautiful surface quality.

My volume prices will be somewhat higher than other services on the market. However: by smart hollowing of your model, we can reduce costs and provide you with a guaranteed higher quality level.

FIXING COLORED 3D MODELS

Most 3D models have to be ‘fixed’ before they can be 3D printed: every surface has to have a minimum thickness. Especially with textured (colored) models this is very difficult: almost every (automated) fixing software looses the color information. I know exactly how to thicken surfaces and details enough to be 3D printed while keeping the color information.

DETAILS

I will handle your model personally. I have a lot of experience in delicate surfaces like hair and facial features, I am able to produce smaller details than any other service on the market.

COLOR

I only print on a Projet 650 which is specifically calibrated to my requirements. Because I can control the output of your textures in detail, I am able to produce the brightest and sharpest colors possible.

SURFACE

To achieve a beautiful surface quality, the model has to be post processed intensively. Furthermore, the machine has to be adjusted during printing to achieve an even distribution of layers. Because of the way I do this and the kind of coatings I use, I am able to provide you with an unmatched surface quality.

MATERIAL

The material used in sculptures is industrial gypsum infused with industrial glue and coated in UV-resistant wax. Small imperfections, rings and spots are part of the current standard in 3D-printing. Discolorations over time can occur due to unknown parameters in relation to the new technique. Gypsum is extremely sensitive to water, keep out of direct sunlight and humid environments. Sculptures are best kept in a airtight (perspex) box.
